Despite being a three course dinner, it passes by quickly. I manage a bite of each serving before my stomach tangles up into knots, and I have to put down my fork. I’m much too nervous about the Task and far too embarrassed about what happened with Lucien to enjoy the creamy lobster bisque or the savory beef tenderloin with garlic potatoes. I can’t even bring myself to take more than one bite of the decadent cheesecake, which really is such a shame. Maybe I can visit the kitchens after the Task and get some of the cheesecake to go.

I try to put on a confident face as Dad stands and all eyes fall on us. “I want to thank all of you for joining us tonight. I consider each of you to be a part of my family, and I am indebted to each one of you for your service over the last four hundred and ninety-nine years.”

All of the HTF members look to Dad with the same sense of pride and steadfast devotion. They’ve all been by him since the beginning. I can only hope that if—and that’s a big if—I become queen, I can amass a task force half as loyal as Dad’s HTF members.

Dad raises his glass. “A toast. For you all for sticking by my side through thick and thin, and for my girls—one of which will usher us into the future. Cheers.”

Every person lifts his or her glass and salutes the Lord of the Underworld. After I take a sip of my water, I happen to catch Lucien watching me over the rim of his own glass. His face gives away nothing of what he is thinking or feeling, and that makes me furious. How could he look at me like that—like nothing almost happened between us?

Dad announces that the intermission has started and that we have fifteen minutes before the start of the second Task. He barely has the words out before I’m scooting my chair back and fleeing the room.

I barge into the parlor room without knocking. Khalil glances up at me from where he reposes on the velvet chaise lounge situated in the middle of the room. “Dinner over already? Did you bring me back something?”

“No.”

He sits up at the tone of my voice. “What’s wrong?”

I stomp over to where he sits and collapse beside him in a tangle of skirts. He barely has time to move his legs before I settle down on the end of the chair. “I’m an idiot.”

“You’re just now figuring that out?”

I swat him on the knee half-heartedly.

Khalil scoots closer and drapes an arm across my shoulders and pulls me in close. “I’m sorry. That was a dumb joke. What happened?”

I proceed to tell him about the not-moment I had with Lucien in the hallway. “Why do I keep doing this to myself?” I ask before lowering my face into my hands. I continue, my voice muffled by my palms, “He obviously doesn’t see me that
